extras – tripod / bag / lights

In this part we’re going to talk about some extras to add to your kit to make video recording more fun and help make your video the best it can be.

A tripod is good to have. It’s the best way to get steady shots and also videotape your-self. Try to find one that’s full size, not a table top model because you will need it to extend at least up to almost eye level. Most tripods have a quick release that attaches to the bottom of your camcorder and then that clips into a slot on the tripod. You can then remove and remount the camcorder to the tripod quickly and easily. Some come with a carry bag but I put an old camera neck strap on mine and that way I can carry it over my shoulder out of the way and it’s easily ready to set up.

Also a bag or case is a must have item. Some camcorders come bundled with extras like a bag as a kit. If you didn’t, they are available just about anywhere. I regularly find good ones in thrift stores for just a few dollars. You could even use a backpack, brief-case or canvas type shopping bag, anything to hold your camcorder and extras. Carrying your camcorder in your pocket is okay if you don’t have anything else in there that would scratch or otherwise damage the camcorder. But there are informal occasions where you may want to just grab the camcorder quick for a few shots. In that case pockets are great. But for going to a school event or something similar it’s better to have a bag containing all the things you would need to make the video the most fun and the best it can be.

batteries

One of the most important items is the battery and its charger. Keep the batteries charged up. The one’s that come with camcorders usually are good for about 45 minutes. Before you video any event, make sure there is enough battery power for the full length of the shoot. You can buy additional larger batteries that will last up to four hours if you shoot sports events or long activities. Temperature affects batteries also. Extreme heat or cold will drain batteries, so keep your battery stored at room temperature. If you are doing a video in the cold keep your camcorder or at least the battery in your pocket close to your body so it will stay warm until you need it. Most camcorders use a specific battery just for that model but some of the ultra compacts can use regular AA or AAA batteries. This is a nice feature because they are available anywhere and you can also buy re-chargeable ones that last a lot longer.

Another added extra that’s good to have handy is a small battery powered light that fits on the accessory shoe on your camcorder if it has one or on a light bracket that screws into the tripod mount on the bottom of your camcorder. These little lights will help when shooting videos in dark locations or just to add a little more light on your subject.  They usually run on AA or AAA batteries and will last up to an hour or so depending on usage. The new LED ones are inexpensive, don’t get hot and will last a long time.

These are a few added extras that will make your video making experience even more fun. They are items that you may want to purchase as you can and sometime they are packaged as a bundled accessory kit.

Have Fun.
