For inexpensive video lighting there are several choices. Halogen work lights are great for lighting outdoors. They are powerful with great color but run very hot. For most of my videos I use the metal reflector lights with the spring clamps for lighting idoors or out .

I put cool white fluorescent bulbs in because they run completely cool to the touch and with proper white balance they look good for video lighting. I usually would clamp it on a light stand or tripod but I never really liked how it held or how it looked.  I wanted a better mounting for the lights. I came up with a mount system that works really well, is inexpensive and looks good too.

First I went to my local home improvement store and picked up a small ¼” screw (that’s the same thread size as a tripod screw) 1.5” long and a ¼” extension nut. Next, I removed the spring clamp from the light by loosening the small wing nut on the clamp that holds the clamp assembly to the light socket on the knurled ball in the spring. I will save and use the clamps for other things (nothing goes to waste).

I put the screw in the nut and then tightened the clamp down on the screw head. Now the nut will screw on the top of my light stand or tripod and holds securely and looks better. You could also add an optional small spring or piece of rubber under the screw so the light can swivel around and it will hold perfectly still. The whole mounting assembly costs about $3.00 and gave me three assemblies one for each of my lights.
